A PLACE OF HEAVEN
I have always been drawn to the poetics of the everyday. Fragments of light nestled within life, which, with great attention, I am privileged to capture and bring to light in the darkroom. I spent the summer of 2024 at Shanti Bhavan, a place that is deeply connected to the concepts of fate and destiny. True to its name, which translates to ‘Haven of Peace,’ the school serves as a residential sanctuary where children receive not only a rigorous education but also the safety and emotional support necessary to thrive. A dedicated team accompanies children from disadvantaged backgrounds, guiding them through profound personal transformation that empowers them to rewrite their life narratives. The heart of my work lies in the transformation of intimate emotional logs into something sentimental. Volunteering alongside this team allowed me to listen to and observe these young souls while also teaching me valuable lessons about joy and unconditional love. This experience offered me a new perspective on the evolution of suffering, one that compelled me to re-examine my own past, my private pains, and the landscapes of my own childhood. I discovered that compassion and love are the driving forces behind our world’s pursuit of equal opportunity. These children, given a chance to live anew, opened a door for me to witness life alongside them—without judgment, in a space of total acceptance. Upon returning to New York with my film rolls, I realized I was in the midst of a collective healing process. I now understand that these children are the beating heart of my first exhibition, “A Place of Heaven.” I seek not the polished image, but the raw, unvarnished truth of the human experience. Through the platinum-palladium process, deep, velvety shadows become a vessel for unseen emotions, rendering each hand-printed piece a singular, unrepeatable creation, like life itself.
